We Have No Problems Houston, we dont have a problem. It is with our utmost and deepest regret that we are writing you this missive to inform you that you dont have any problems. Sure, you may think you have problems, and we know what youre thinking: Yes I do! I have all kinds of problems! No you dont. Yes I do! Umm, no you dont. YES I DO! I have thousands of problems! Really? Thousands? Well, maybe hundreds of problems. No you dont. Stop saying that! Yes I do! Fine, name your hundreds of problems, then. I dont have enough money to pay my bills. My significant other left me. I lost my home to foreclosure. I lost my job. My phone got shut off because I couldnt pay the bill. I spilled food on my shirt at lunch today. My cat ate my homework. Umm, OK, am I over 100 problems yet? Seriously, though, you really should make a list.  Go on, give it a try. Take five minutes and write down all your problems, it will be useful for this next part. OK, did you do it? If not, stop reading and write them down. OK, now take a look at your list. How many problems did you have? Twenty? Fifty? One hundred and eighteen? Well, regardless of the number You know deep down those arent real problems, and you have the power to fix them if you really want to. You also know there are people in this world with real problems (genocide, imprisonment, slavery, disease, health issues, etc.). Thankfully, you live somewhere where you have access to the Internet, which means you probably have relatively easy access to food and water, and you live in a relatively developed country. So, as long as you have your health, you dont have real problems. You have challenges. Perhaps that sounds like semantic wordplay, but its not. We all face challenges in life, and some of them are extremely difficult challengesâ€"challenges that seem insurmountable at times. But challenges are also what makes life exciting and interesting and fun. Challenges often give meaning to our lives. Lets face it, our lives would be extremely boring without challenges.  So, its time to recognize that most of the time we dont have any problems, not real problems anyway. Many readers at the time rejected the essay because they failed to understand the irony. It is presently one of the most well known works of satire and is a classic example of the technique most commonly used today. The entire essay from the title down to the last sentence were meant to be taken ironically, which is a rare form, but very effective when trying getting a point across. This essay will explain why the text was meant to be taken ironically and why Swift used irony instead of straightforward statements. The proposal itself is a symbol of the British oppression. The mere fact that anyone would fatten up human beings like livestock and devour them is preposterous, yet the British oppression devours and consumes the Irish people in a different kind of way. Swift uses irony instead of straight forward remarks to express his anger toward the British and how their oppression on his people is destroying the economy. Swifts anger has become so great he states that much of the population would have been better off dead, which may be exaggerated but not ironic. Instead of coming straight out and writing a rational proposal he uses satire to mock the British but at the same time get a valuable point across. All satire is ultimately driven by anger at some level. Its purpose is to not only entertain but to drive change. A Modest Proposal is a reminder of these roots. As a passionate supporter of Irish human rights Swift was looking for change and felt the best way to achieve it was through this proposal. At Doki Doki, work is divided into divisions with each division having its own set of responsibilities. At the same time all the divisions report to the management. Each division also has their own head. For example, all the assistant chefs have to follow the head chef while all the servers follow the manager. Again, the manager and head chef are answerable to the management. This way the management is decentralized and a clear chain of command is formed to ensure that the activities are run efficiently (Peaucelle, 2015). According to Geert Hofstede, management method varies from country to country and even company to company. The kind of method adopted is heavily dependent on the companys background and how things are run within the management. The culture at Doki Doki is of the Japanese orientation. The concept of uncertainty avoidance is often seen at Doki Doki. They prefer structured situations for which they can take immediate action (Minkov, 2012). Every incident that occurs in Doki Doki is recorded and the appropriate action to it is suggested to every employee working at Doki Doki. The restaurant is always prepared for any kind of situations and learns from the incidents that occur outside the restaurant as well. Unexpected leaves and unpunctuality are highly criticized at Doki Doki. Also, the goals of Doki Doki are long term oriented meaning that they would rather work for reputation than work for mere money. Another key HRM principle adopted at Doki Doki is the five disciplines proposed by Peter Senge. Personal mastery, mental models, building shared vision, team learning are the four disciples which combine to form the fifth discipline of system thinking. At Doki Doki, every person is expected to reach their own level of personal mastery in which every work they do. Their perspective is moved towards the shared vision to serve the customer in the best possible way and to increase the revenue of the company. Team learning is implemented by tea, work that is done under the supervision of the head chef and the manager (Senge, 2014). All these together help Doki Doki achieve a systems thinking the helps to work as one towards a common goal. Day to Day HRM at Doki Doki At Doki Doki there are several HRM processes and procedures followed through a clear HRM framework. The company has a defined standard of conduct that is integrated into the organization design. The standard of conduct is expected from every single employee at Doki Doki. The conduct states that the employee have to respectful at all costs to the customers and should not indulge in any disputes with the customers. In case of an issue they have to communicate to their higher authority or to the management to ensure that the issues are handled in the best possible manner (Armstrong, 2014). For example, when a drunk customer abuses a server, rather than indulging in a word fight the server would simply inform the manager who would escort the customer out of the restaurant. This also impacts the framework of good governance where though importance is place over customer satisfaction the company does not allow any of its employee to feel disrespected (Oke, 2016). Grievance handling is a major part of the HRM activities at Doki Doki. Any kind of harassment or discrimination is not tolerated at Doki Doki. In case such a behavior is noticed they victim can report it to the manager or the management directly and post investigation the harasser would be suspended or terminated as need be (Purce, 2014). Nayasha a college graduate was working at Doki Doki when one of the fellow employees passed on sexual comments as a joke. Nayasha confronted her colleague and asked him to stop doing it. Manager on noticing this spoke to the employee and informed him that he would be removed from the company and his behavior would be informed to the police to ensure the safety of Nayasha outside the restaurant, if he did not conduct himself. Since the restaurant is in the process of scaling itself, it is obvious that there is a need to increase the staff members to perform various duties (Jiang, 2012). The management has a register of suggestions for the employees that is reviewed weekly. In case of a continuous demand for increase in the employee number, the management contacts that particular division and asks all its members to for the necessity of the inclusion. After understanding the issue, the management checks in-house for the solution. As hiring would incur additional costs (Mello, 2014), management asks its employees itself to give suggestions on what can be done without hiring the employee. The suggestions costs and effectiveness is then compared with the costs and effectiveness of hiring an employee and the better option is adopted (Budhwar, 2013). This scenario was put in place when an assistant chef had to leave the restaurant on personal grounds. The load on the assistant chefs had been increasing especially on the holidays. To balance this the chefs had raised a demand to find a replacement. The management consulted with the team of chefs and asked them to provide suggestions. It was then that the management realized that the chef who left handled only three dishes which were regularly ordered and after he left the chefs where could not understand how to share the load. The management along with the head chef trained the assistant chefs on all these three dishes and the issue was resolved without the necessity of hiring. It follows different procedures when recruiting different sectors of the employees. Before any personnel is hired the company analysis the need for hiring (Alfes, 2013). All the thus gathered chefs are asked to prepare a cuisine that is regular on the Japanese menu and the food taste and quality is che cked by the Head Chef and management. First level of screening is done here. Post this step each of the chef is asked to prepare a dish as guided by the head chef. The person who is able to follow instructions easily and is able to bring their own twist to the dish is selected. The person is also checked for their attitude towards other chefs. Friendly, helpful and quick leaners are given preference (Riley, 2014). Manager and Servers Servers and Managers directly interact with the customer. They mode of recruitment is usually through window advertising showing that positions are open. In case of managers the positions are open on job websites. For both the positions preference is given to Eastern applicants but not limited to them. People who are experienced are also preferred (Jiang, 2012). Under graduate students are preferred for server roles while managers are usually business graduates. The first level of screening for both the positions is their ability to talk. Their body language, tone and fluency are tested in a casual interview. Anyone who is impolite, violent or rude are rejected (Ulrich, 2013). For the server role, their ability to walk with grace, remember and recite the menu is checked. For the managers, day to day situations, which usually happen in a restaurant are given and their solutions are analyzed (Nel, 2014). Applicants who clear these rounds are selected. Training and Appraisal at Doki Doki At Doki Doki every employee is given a mandatory training for the first one week. One the first day, they are introduced with the various departments of the restaurants and the various personnel that work in them. The assistant chefs and the managers are given 5% of the profit while the servers are allowed to keep their tips. The basic salary of the employee is raised by 15% every year. In case of exceptional employee performance an additional pay is given as a bonus, the amount of which is again dependent on the sales done that month. Career development is based on a combination of experience and performance. The job growth is limited at Doki Doki as the staff are few. However, whenever there is an opening the current staff is informed and interviewed to see if they can fit the job. The interview is offered to servers for manager role and assistant chef to head chef role. In both case the applicants should have the experience and should be top performers to be eligible for the interview in the first place (Kehoe, 2013). Since most of the employees at Doki Doki are students, their examinations and college schedule is taken into consideration at all times by the management. The company makes sure that the education of the employee is not effected by their job. Instead they ensure that the employee has a learning experience at the job. Leaves are granted during the examination periods to help the employee study without any disturbance. Doki Doki being a small restaurant may not have all the above mentioned policies in hard copy format. However, they do ensure that every employee is giving adequate training and bonuses. The reason being that only a happy employee would make the customers happy. Doki Doki and the Laws Doki Doki though is a small restaurant abides by several employment laws laid down by the fair work ombudsman of the Australian Government. The pay, leaves, employee entitlements etc are all adopted from the same. Doki Doki has also taken up courses offered by for small business hiring and record keeping to understand the best way to handle their business. They use the pay calculator and the pay guide suggested by the fair work policies. Jobs at Doki Doki are posted on the government website jobsearch.gov.au and the employees are hired through this site. This process is generally adopted for managerial roles. Going Abroad At NYU

Choosing to study abroad is an exciting opportunity. Traditionally, students will go abroad for a semester in a different university of their choosing. This process becomes a little difficult because you have to make sure that the courses you are taking at the university abroad has credits that will transfer back over to your home university. At NYU, there is no need to worry about this. NYU has fourteen global campuses (including the New York City campus) on six continents*. There is no need to double check that your courses satisfy any credit requirement because it is still a part of the university network. The Global Studies Office helps the students get their necessary travel documents so there is constantly someone helping you arrive safely and securely. There are also several other programs other than the typical semester away. For instance, this past summer I went to a month long writing program at the NYU Florence campus. It was incredibly beautiful and I made some great friends. I was unable to go to NYU Florence for the whole semester because it didn’t offer enough courses relevant to my major, but I desperately wanted to go to Italy. There are other short-term programs for spring break, January, and summer. They have programs for the arts, writing, fashion, science, and more. While I am still doing a semester abroad later in my time at NYU, this short-term opportunity was a great way to focus on a specialized study. Some students can even apply to start directly at a global campus. In the Global Liberal Studies program of NYU, a student spends their freshman year abroad at one of NYU’s global campuses. It is also possible to NYU Shanghai or NYU Abu Dhabi for all four years of your college experience. Both of those full time global campuses are English-instructed courses, but in a very unique a globalized setting. Analysis of Keyblogger Keyblogger is basically a spyware. As indicated by its namesake, it logs or recors your keystrokes. When you type in your username or password, this information is logged and amde available to the hacker. Keyloggers can either be physical or software-based, the latter being more difficult to detect. A keylogger works in several different ways Each keystroke is recorded and immediately dispatched to some remote listener over the internet. Keystroke are collected ina temporary file, which is then periodically uploaded to the authors location over the internet. The keystrokes are collected in a temporary file, but much like a spam bot, can listen for and recieve instructions from the author. The logger could thus upload the collectedinformation when requested. The collected keystrokes could never be uploaded. Instead, if someone has remote access to your machine, or even physical access to your machine, they could simply come by and copy theinformation manually. Finally, the information may not even be kept on your machine. There are keyloggers that include a little flash memory and can be quickly inserted in between installing, the person behind it stops by and picks up the device containing all yourinformation. There are two methods for bypassing keyloggers, both which involve confusing the logger with random keystrokes. The first, when you need to enter a username or password, is to randomly insert irrelevant numbers and letters in between the same. Once entered, just select the random hits wih the mouse and delete them before logging in. The second is for foolingkeyloggers that capture all keystrokes and not just those typed in the password box. Enter your info randomly across the browser and search bars along with random numbers and letters. When you wish to log in, simply copy and paste the relevant bits into the log-in boxes. You can use KYPS, a reverse proxy server that takes a password, encrypts into a one-time code, printed from the KPYS web site that can be used to log into any computer safely. After being decrypted by the KYPS system and logged in, it deletes the one time code as a password. KYPS also acts as a normal proxy to protect your browsing history. When browsing, it displays the KYPS URL along with random characters and symbols to maximise security. The work offline option shouldnt be relied on too often. This feature is specific to Internet Explorer or the application with that function, and its not too hard for a keylogger to bypass something so narrow. Also, even if you physically pulled out the internet connection wire from your PC, only the first of the above approaches is rendered harmless. The keylogger can still quietly collect the data and transmit it when a connection is available. As such, there is no way to be 100% carefull against keyloggers. It depends on specific keyloggers most of the time. However, you should always remain careful and cautious when entering a cyber cafà ©

Personal Background Chodorow is often appointed as a leading theorist in feminist thought, especially in the field of psychoanalysis and feminist psychology. Her essays are included in many books concerning gender roles and construction as well as psychoanalysis. Her evaluations of the ways in which the psychological dynamics of the gender system is systematically generated and subject to historical change and development are acknowledged as significant contributions to feminist theory. Chodorow is now at the University of California at Berkeley, and she continues her Education and Training She graduated from Radcliffe College in 1966, she earned her PhD in sociology from Brandeis University and received her psychoanalytic training at the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute. She then received her PhD from Brandeis University in 1975. Major Contributions Chodorow begins her experiences with challenging psychoanalyst none other than Sigmund Frued. His ambition for psychoanalysis led him to his first methods and theories. These methods and theories are as followed; Oedipus complex, dream analysis and his understanding of sexuality and psychopathology. Nancy was inspired by the psychology of women contributions of the 1920’s and 1930’s. Frued’s Oedipus pivots an entire legacy of Nancy’s curiosity of mother-daughter psychology, and which led Frued (1931) to redefine the psychology of feminity. As Chodorow was influenced by the influencing psychoanalysis in the 1930’s, she realized that psychological anthropology (her own subspecialty) had explored the psychology of gender culture. Chodorow’s first women’s conference in 1969 is what propelled her and other women into awareness. â€Å"Being and Doing† was Chodorow’s first published book which contained a cross-cultural examination of the socialization of Males and Females (1972). Its main focus was that sexism is political, economic, familial institutions in terms of men’s behavior toward women. Chodorow explains that â€Å"Being and Doing† located the men’s origin of male dominance in men’s dread of women and fear of their own external feminity. Surprisingly, Chodorow found that male and female bisexual identifications were asymmetrical; the man’s being more threatening. (Chodorow, 2004). The book concluded that women’s identity was based on â€Å"being† and men’s masculine identity was based on â€Å"doing.† â€Å"Being and Doing† was published over 30 years ago and inadvertently anticipated many of themes that are now found in psychoanalytic rethinking of feminity. The disadvantage of a sole proprietorship is obtaining capital funding. * Liability – As the owner of a sole proprietorship, one is personally liable for all business debts, creditors may sue you personally to satisfy the debt. * Income taxes – As a sole proprietor you must report all business income or losses on your personal income tax return; the business itself is not taxed separately. * Longevity – Longevity depends on the owner and their ability to operate the business; this can be significantly affected if the owner becomes sick or dies. * Control – The owner is in complete control of the business, It is the owners responsibility for all decisions pertaining to business operations * Profit retention – The owner has 100% control of profit retention. They may cho ose to invest their profits or use it for personal use. * Convenience/Burden – Sole proprietorships are convenient and easy to start up since there are no governing laws. If one partner does something negligent, all partners can be held liable. * Income taxes – All partners are responsible to report their earnings on their own personal tax returns. * Longevity – general partnerships longevity is based on the agreement between partners, they can agree to end their partnership as easily as they formed it. With a partnership between more than two partners, the person leaving can agree to sell their portion of the business. * Control – Control of a general partnership is shared between all parties involved. * Profit retention – All profits of the general partnership belong to the owners. * Convenience/Burden –A general partnership has the convenience of an easy start-up, all partners have a personal interest in the partnership and all profits belong to the partners.  A main burden with a general partnership is the personal liability of all debts and legalities. LIMITED PARTNERSHIP: Limited partnership is similar to a shareholder of a general partnership, being only liable for the amount of investment one has contributed. Limited partners have no management authority. * Liability – A limited partner is only liable for the investments they have contributed, no more no less. * Income taxes – A limited partner reports their share of capital gains and losses on their personal income tax returns. * Longevity – The longevity of a limited partner is based solely on the amount of investment one contributes and their continuation on their investment. * Control – Limited partners generally do not have any control of a general partnership other than their investment. * Profit retention – The amount of profit a limited partner will receive is based on the amount of investment into the company. * Convenience/Burden – The convenience of a limited partnership is one get to share in the profits and losses, but they do not have to partic ipate in the business itself. A burden of limited partnership can be the lack of involvement for the investment one has contributed, C-CORPORATION: Is a legal way that businesses can organize to limit the owner’s financial and legal liability. C-corporations are taxed separately from the owners. Though they are taxed separately, c-corps have the disadvantage of double taxation, being taxed on the corporate level as well as the shareholder level. * Liability – C-corporations provide limited liability to owners, therefore, owners are not usually responsible for the corporations debts and liabilities. * Income taxes – C-corporations are taxed as a separate entity under corporate tax rates for any business income, any profits made to owners are then taxed again at the personal income tax level. * Longevity – The life of a C-corporation can exist indefinitely based on the shareholders, by selling of stocks, unlimited number of owners and transfer of ownership. * Control – Control of a C-corporation is held by its shareholders, but may be delegated to a board of directors. * Profit retention -Because a C-corporation’s income is taxed twice, paying taxes on its income and the shareholder’s also paying personal taxes on the dividend  income received from the corporation, there is less profit retention than that of a general partnership. * Convenience/Burden – C-corporations have the convenience of unlimited shareholders, as well as no restrictions on who is allowed to become a shareholder. The double taxation of a C-corporation can be a burden to shareholders based on profit retention. S-CORPORATION: A corporation that does not pay federal taxes. All corporate income and losses are passed through to the shareholders and claimed on their personal income taxes. * Liability – Shareholders of an S- corporation are offered limited liability for the corporation’s debt. * Income taxes – S-corporations do not pay income taxes, instead, income passes through to the shareholders and is claimed on their personal income taxes. * Longevity – Similar to a C-corporation, an S-corporation can exist indefinitely, though S-corporations have regulatory restrictions on the number of shareholders it may have. * Control – The control of an S-corporation is held by its shareholders, but may be delegated to a board of directors. * Profit retention – An S-corporation allows its shareholders to keep more of the earned profits by passing through its income taxes directly to its shareholders unlike a C-corporation which is double taxed. * Convenience/Burden – S-corporations have the convenience of retaining more of its profits by passing through its income taxes directly to its shareholders, avoiding the double taxation of a C- corporation. S-corporations have the burden of regulatory restrictions, including limiting the number of shareholders; shareholders cannot be corporations and must be U.S. citizens. LIMITED LIABILITY COMPANY: A Limited liability company (LLC) is a business entity that offers its owners limited liability. Owners are not personally liable for any debt other than their investment. * Liability – owners of a LLC have limited liability; they are only liable for their investment. * Income taxes – A LLC is not a taxable entity, income taxes are passed through to the owners and their personal income taxes. * Longevity – Limited liability companies can exist indefinitely, they have the option of transferring ownership without restriction. * Control – The control of a LLC can be based on the number of owners as well as the amount of investment one has in the company. * Profit retention – Profits of a LLC is passed through to the owners and is  taxed at their personal tax rate, allowing owners to pay less in taxes and retain more profit. * Convenience/Burden – Limited liability companies have the convenience of pass through taxation, allowing the owners lar ger profits. LLC’s have the burden of varying restrictions from state to state, there are different renewal fees and franchise taxes that must be paid and LLC’s must pay self-employment taxes.

Araby, By James Joyce - 917 Words

Araby is a short story by James Joyce about a young boy who is infatuated a young woman who is the older sister of one of his friends. He watches her from afar and believes that his feelings are true love. He lacks the confidence to speak to her or confide in anyone else. The narrator speaks of her as if she were the most beautiful and wondrous human on earth, however, he does not realize that he is in love with the thought of her and not necessarily her. The narrator lives in Ireland as James Joyce did. At this time Ireland was deeply Catholic. Catholicism is usually strict when it comes to romance and gender roles, especially in the late 1800s or early 1900s. Magan s sister is older than the narrator and in a convent. Both she and the narrator are from religious family as the narrator goes to the Christian Brothers’ School. Dating was not necessarily an option especially at their ages. The narrator would look odd trying to befriend her. Their probably is a age gap between the of two or more years and they are of the opposite gender. Watching her from afar was the only thing the narrator felt he could do. He honestly could not really get to know her well, which led to just an attraction to her physical appearance and to his own imagination of her.
